IN PERSON TUTORING
Learn French or Spanish
in a setting you can enjoy and relax in
Private 1-on-1 lessons with Heidi at The Language Coach classroom in Jacksonville Beach: a calm, beautiful space where learning feels nothing like a classroom. All levels. French, Spanish and English for non native speakers.
Why in person works
Some things are just easier in person.
Online tutoring is genuinely effective, Heidi offers that too and it works well. But in-person lessons have qualities that are hard to replicate through a screen and for some students and some goals, they make a meaningful difference.
Pronunciation is the clearest example. Watching how a sound is formed — the lip position, the jaw, the breath — is something you lose entirely on video. For students working seriously on their French or Spanish accent, being in the same room is beneficial.
You can hear an accent correction on a call. But you can see it in person — and seeing it is often what makes it click.
There is also the simple fact that sitting down with someone for an hour, in a dedicated space with no notifications and no household background noise, creates a quality of focus that is genuinely different. For many students, the in-person lesson is the most concentrated hour of language engagement they have all week.
Pronunciation coaching you can actually see.
Watching mouth position and breathing technique in real time makes a difference that audio alone cannot replicate — especially for French phonetics and Spanish rolling Rs.
Undivided, uninterrupted focus.
A dedicated space with no screens competing for your attention. Some students find this alone makes their in-person lessons more productive than anything they do online.
Physical materials, real-time annotation.
Working through a text, making notes, circling something on the page — there is an immediacy to physical materials that still works differently to a shared screen.
Better real-time non-verbal feedback.
Heidi can read whether something has been understood, whether you are confused, whether you are close to getting it. All from cues that simply do not transmit as well over video.
A space that is worth showing up for.
The setting is part of the experience. Students who look forward to coming tend to keep coming and consistency is what actually drives language progress.
A garden in Jacksonville Beach. Not a classroom.
The Language Coach meeting place is not a language center with fluorescent lights and laminated vocabulary posters on the walls. It is a private, garden-based setting in Jacksonville Beach designed to feel relaxed, focused and genuinely pleasant to spend an hour in.
That matters more than it might seem. People learn better when they are comfortable. When there is no performance anxiety, no strangers listening in, no commute-frazzled mindset to shake off first. You arrive, you settle in and the lesson begins.
The environment changes everything. Students who have struggled for years in group classes suddenly find their voice when it is somewhere other than school.
Lessons take place outside when the Florida weather allows, which, in Jacksonville Beach, is most of the year. There is something about being outdoors, away from screens, in a setting that feels unhurried, that makes language come more naturally.
The setting
Garden and outdoor setting
Lessons under the Florida sky when conditions allow. A genuinely distinctive place to learn — nothing like it anywhere else in Jax Beach.
Private and quiet
No other students, no background noise, no distractions. The full hour belongs to you.
All materials provided
Resources, worksheets and reading materials are prepared for each session. Bring a notebook and writing utensil for notetaking.
Easy parking
Straightforward access with parking onsite; none of the hassle of traveling to a language school.
Inside a Lesson
What an in-person session actually looks like.
Every lesson is built around where you are and where you are going; not a coursebook schedule that moves at a pace designed for someone else. The first session is always a relaxed conversation to understand your background, your goals and what has not worked before.
From that point on, each lesson builds directly on the last. Nothing is wasted. If you struggled with something last week, that is where this week will start.
01 - Arrival and settle in
There is no rush. A few minutes to arrive properly — a glass of water, a moment to transition out of whatever came before. Lessons that start relaxed go better. That is not incidental; it is deliberate.
02 - Warm-up and review
A short conversational warm-up in the target language, plus a quick recap of anything from last time. This reinforces retention and tells Heidi what you understand and what still needs work.
03 - The main focus
The core of the lesson. Could be grammar, speaking, pronunciation, exam technique, reading comprehension, vocabulary in context — whatever moves your progress forward most that week.
04 - Conversation practice
Every lesson ends with real conversation — not scripted exchanges, but genuine back-and-forth on topics that are actually interesting. This is where everything gets applied under natural conditions.
05 - Next steps
A clear, manageable set of things to do before the next lesson. Nothing overwhelming — just what will actually make a difference. Homework is assigned at the end of the session.
Your Tutor
Heidi
French and Spanish Tutor, The Language Coach, Jacksonville Beach
Heidi built her French and Spanish not in a classroom but in the countries themselves — studying in France, living in Quebec, working in Spain. The difference between someone who has passed exams in a language and someone who has navigated daily life in it comes through in every lesson.
Her teaching approach is unhurried but efficient. She knows which things are worth spending time on and which textbook fixations can be left behind. Students consistently describe her as the first tutor who made them feel genuinely capable.
Starting from zero is fine as is picking up where you left off.
Who this is for - All levels welcome.
In-person lessons suit a wide range of people.
Complete beginners
Never touched French or Spanish before? In-person is an excellent way to start. Heidi can respond to your confusion in the moment, adjust instantly and ensure everything is clear before you leave.
Pronunciation-focused learners
If improving your accent matters to you — and in French particularly, it matters a lot — in-person coaching gives you the visual and acoustic feedback that a video call cannot match.
Exam candidates
AP exams, university placement or entrance examinations. In-person sessions allow for the kind of intensive practice, timed drills, and spoken feedback that exam preparation really needs.
Parents of children learning
Children respond well to the in-person environment — the dedicated space, the routine, the physical materials. It signals that this is real and worth taking seriously, in a way a screen sometimes does not. (13 years and older)
Professionals out of the office
A lunchtime lesson somewhere that is not your desk can feel like a genuine break. Several of Heidi's regular students treat the lesson as the most enjoyable hour of their working week.
Anyone who has struggled to stick at it
Apps, YouTube, evening classes, are all eventually abandoned. A specific place to be, at a specific time, with a person who knows where you left off. Most people find this actually sticks and retains their attention.

What students say.
From students who learn online with Heidi.
“I took French in high school and have only recently retired. I told myself I would pick it up again when I had the time. I have now completed 4 of the 10 lessons. It’s been easy to organise the lessons as Heidi is super flexible. I am excited to keep going with my French studies and I am understanding more and more.”
— N. Fugina, Texas, USA“I absolutely loved Heidi’s way of teaching. I took 10 weeks of tutoring to rebuild my confidence and get my French back to the level I needed before travelling to France for a work secondment.
Heidi’s approach is incredibly flexible and tailored to what you actually need, which made every lesson feel useful, practical and enjoyable. Her support has been invaluable for my trip, and I honestly cannot recommend her enough.
— Valerie H, Jacksonville Beach, FL, USA"I booked 5 lessons with Heidi to improve my Spanish as I was going on a ski trip to Argentina with friends. I’m based in France and Heidi was really accommodating my time zone and it was really early for her! We used Google Meet for our lessons and I am now back from my trip and it went really well as I was the only Spanish speaker. I am going to have another 5 lessons as we are returning next summer to Chile for more skiing."
— J.C. Gilli, student, St. Raphael, FranceFAQs on things people ask before their first lesson.

-
Yes. Many students do exactly this, e.g. in-person most weeks, online when travel or schedule makes it easier. The lesson plan and progression carry seamlessly across both formats.
-
In Jacksonville Beach the outdoor setting is usable for most of the year. When conditions do not allow for it, summer storms, extreme heat, lessons take place inside. The quality of the lesson does not change either way.
-
Yes. In-person works particularly well for younger learners who find it hard to engage consistently on a screen. The dedicated setting and routine make a real difference for children. *13 years old minimum.
-
This is one of the most common starting points. More stays in the memory than people expect, and the first session quickly finds what is still there and builds from it, rather than starting from scratch.
-
48 hours’ notice is standard. Heidi works mornings, lunchtimes and evenings across the week, so an alternative slot is usually easy to find.
-
